Water Softener Sizing
A properly sized water softener is critical for efficiency and performance. Under-sized systems regenerate too frequently; over-sized systems may not regenerate often enough, allowing bacterial growth in the resin bed. Sizing involves:
- Household size (number of people × average daily usage)
- Water hardness (in GPG)
- Iron level (iron increases required grain capacity)
- Preferred regeneration frequency (typically every 3–7 days)
Formula: (People × 75 gallons/day) × (Hardness GPG + Iron mg/L × 5) = Daily grain demand × 7 days = Recommended capacity
Example: 4-person household, 20 GPG hardness, 1 mg/L iron → (4 × 75) × (20 + 5) = 7,500 grains/day × 7 = 52,500 grain capacity minimum
